A Brief History Of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu JitsuBrazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art that has developed over time, but has its origins in twentieth century Kodokan Judo. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is predicated on the idea that in a combat situation or a fight, a smaller competitor can successfully defend himself against a larger competitor using proper techniques and the idea of leverage. Some of these techniques are joint locks and choke holds.

The art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has a rich history. Mitsuya Maeda was an expert in Japan at a Japanese judoka. He left Japan in 1904 and traveled to many countries to give demonstrates in this discipline. He also accepted many fights and ultimately worked his way to Brazil in 1914. Maeda modeled ideas created by judo’s founder, Kano Jigoro, and believed that the martial art of judo was more than simply a martial art. It was a sport and a method of training the body and the mind. It was a lifestyle more than anything else. This idea of living the lifestyle embodies what Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has become today.

Maeda and others developed the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Brazil and the sport has grown and developed over time. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is also known as Gracie Jiu Jitsu because of the influence of the Brazilian Gracie family in the sport. The Gracie family worked with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and developed the techniques throughout the twentieth century and in 1993, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu champion, Royce Gracie, won the first Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in the United States. He won the second and the fourth championship as well, cementing his position as a top mixed martial arts competitor.
